Make a sketch of the rooms in the new house, upstairs, downstairs garage etc

Number, letter and / or name each room in a logical sequence     ie. 1, 2, 3 post the ID ot each room entrance

Identify each box, item or group of items by room # so the     ie. 1, 2, 3  movers will know where they go. If 5 items go to room A, then      you would  have five boxes labeled A

Items with multiple drawers such as dressers can be identified ie. 1A,1B,1C with the appropriate room, item  and drawer sequence ie.      1B,2B,3B identifier so the drawers go back in the right slots.

Boxes of things can be identified with the room number of the ie. 1A,1B,1C new house and lettered with the drawer cabinet or closet      ie. 1B,2B,3B where they go.

It’s easier to move delicate things in a car or van since the ride is usually smoother and you will most likely exercise greater care.

It is quicker to move clothes the way they hang in the closet by having two people carry a sturdy pipe or pole with the clothes hanging      from it than to box them or carrying them in bunches. They can be hung up in a vehicle while still on the pole for easy transport. At      the new house just carry the poles inside and transfer to the new closet.

When loading the truck, place the heaviest items towards the front. You can stop faster than you can accelerate. It will not be       critical how you load or unload since the destination for everything is identified.

At the new house put a duplicate of your floor plan sketch at the entrance and a few strategic points in the house so your helpers can       see where things go.

You might consider an inexpensive set of square linoleum floor tiles to line the cupboards and drawers in the kitchen. They lay flat       and can be cut with a guillotine paper cutter. They are self sticking, clean easily, are quite durable and look good when installed.

Make arrangements to transfer the utilities to you before the seller turns them off. It should be less hassle and less expensive than      getting them turned on once they have been turned off. Set the turn off date for utilities at your residence.

Don't forget those all important forwarding addresses

Inventory the items you will be moving and estimate their weight. Professional movers will also do that so its good to know how if      your estimate is even close to theirs. If you using a self haul rental ask about return conditions including times, fuel fillup, cleaning      one way drop off, deposits, accessory charges.

Eat the food and buy fresh at tyhe new location if you can. Get copies of medical, dental, school, and other items difficult to return to      get. transfer prescriptions to your new town hospital or pharmacy. Arrange for pet move or care.

Return borowed items like tapes, books tools etc.  Open new bank account at your destination since there can be delays for new      residents. Get cash for the trip.

Pack handy items for the move like toiletries, valuable documents, snacks, family, pets and carry first day items like coffee and pot,      cups, etc.
